Concert Band Ensembles

General Information

  • All band students are required to participate in two smaller performing ensembles. The ensembles are divided into two groups: "A" ensembles and "B" ensembles. Each student chooses an "A" and a "B" ensemble.

  • There is no guarantee that students will be the ensemble of their choice. Instrumentation, playing ability, and optimal ensemble size also determine ensemble assignments.

  • Some ensembles are by audition and/or invitation. 

  • The year is divided into five zones. A new zone begins after major performances. Some ensemble choices change while others continue.


Concert Band

  • "A" ensemble

  • Concert Band plays standard concert band literature. During certain zones, all students are required to perform in Concert Band; while in others, it is either optional or not offered.


Percussion Ensemble

  • "A" ensemble

  • Percussion Ensemble is a large ensemble of percussion instruments.


The Culver Eagles Marching Band

  • "A" ensemble

  • The Culver Eagles Marching Band is only offered during Zone 1. This group is a corps-style marching band, that marches in a variety of formations while playing popular or concert literature.


Orchestral Winds

  • "A" ensemble

  • Orchestral Winds is a partial ensemble that teams with the String Orchestra to make a full orchestra. Instrumentation includes: 2 flutes (one doubles piccolo), 2 oboes (one possibly doubling English horn), 2 bassoon, 3 clarinet (one possibly doubles E flat clarinet), bass clarinet, 4 horn, 2 trumpet, 2 trombone, tuba, timpani. Audition/invitation is required.


Wind Ensemble

  • "A" ensemble

  • Wind Ensemble is a small concert band made up advanced players, normally with only one player per part, with up to three percussionists. This group performs at the Organizational Contest, sponsored by the Indiana State School Music Association.


Pocket Band

  • "B" ensemble

  • Pocket Band is a a small military-style marching band, that marches in military formations while playing marches and ceremonial literature.


Jazz Band

  • "B" ensemble

  • Jazz Band is offered all five zones and performs jazz repertoire in a big-band style. Instrumentation includes: saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano, guitar, bass, drum set, and possibly auxiliary percussion/vibraphone. Jazz Band is open to all regardless of instrumentation during Zone 1. Audition/invitation is required for Zones 2 - 5.


Salsa Band

  • "B" ensemble

  • Performs Latin jazz, in a big band or combo setting depending on those interested. Heavy reliance on Latin percussion instruments such as congas, bongos, and timbales. Instrumentation includes: Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, and percussion.


Pep Band

  • "B" ensemble

  • Pep Band performs at athletic events, football in the fall, basketball in the winter. Instrumentation includes: all woodwinds and brass, 2 drum set/percussion, electric bass, guitar, keyboard.


Chamber Groups

  • "A" or a "B" ensemble, depending on the zone

  • Chamber groups are small ensembles, one player per part.
