Meter Identification - Aural

Directions: Listen & identify the meter.

 Easy   

Possible Answers: Duple or triple meter

 Medium   

Possible Answers: Simple duple, simple triple, compound duple, or fast triple

 Hard   

Possible Answers: Simple duple, simple triple, compound duple, a fast triple, compound triple, or complex

Scale Identification - Aural

Triad Identification - Visual

Directions: Identify the root and color of each interval.

 Easy 

Possible answers: Triads in root position only; bass or treble clef; close position

Possible answers: Triads in root position, first inversion, or second inversion; grand staff; open position

Directions: Using a sheet of manuscript paper, notate the correct pitches and rhythm to the melody that you hear. The clef, key signature, instrumentation, and  first note are given in each example.

  • begins on Ý
  • ends with either a PAC or an IAC
  • steps and/or repeated notes (no skips)
  • whole, half, and quarter notes, with no syncopation

Directions: Using a sheet of manuscript paper, notate the correct pitches and rhythm to the melody that you hear. The clef, key signature, instrumentation, and  first note are given in each example.

Parameters:

  • major mode
  • 4/4 or 3/4 time
  • four measures long
  • begins on Ý, ß, or á
  • ends with either a PAC or an IAC
  • steps, repeated notes, and/or skips that outline the tonic triad
  • whole, half, and quarter notes, with no syncopation

Melodic Dictation - Medium

Directions: Using a sheet of manuscript paper, notate the correct pitches and rhythm to the melody that you hear. The clef, key signature, instrumentation, and  first note are given in each example.

Parameters:

  • major mode
  • 4/4 or 3/4 time
  • four measures long
  • begins on Ý, ß, or á
  • has either a PAC, an IAC, or an HC at the end of measure 2 (4/4 time only) and ends with either a PAC or an IAC
  • steps, repeated notes, and/or skips that outline the tonic and/or dominant triad
  • whole, half, quarter and eighth notes, with no syncopation (the eighth notes are either in groups two or four)

Directions: Using a sheet of manuscript paper, notate the correct pitches and rhythm to the melody that you hear. The clef, key signature, instrumentation, and  first note are given in each example.

Parameters:

  • minor mode
  • 4/4 or 3/4 time
  • four measures long
  • begins on Ý, ß, or á
  • has either a PAC, an IAC, or an HC at the end of measure 2 (4/4 time only) and ends with either a PAC or an IAC
  • steps, repeated notes, and/or skips that outline the tonic and/or dominant triad
  • whole, half, dotted quarter, quarter and eighth notes, with no syncopation

Directions: Using a sheet of manuscript paper, notate the correct pitches and rhythm to the melody that you hear. The clef, key signature, instrumentation, and  first note are given in each example.
