Guan Lin Chen wins acclaim for paintings

Guan Lin Chen, a fourth classman in Company A, received two Gold Key Awards for painting at the annual Northwest Indiana Scholastic Art Awards on Sunday, Feb.3. Guan Lin’s work will be on display at the South Bend Regional Art Museum until Feb. 15. Images of his paintings have been sent to New York City for national award consideration. Please congratulate Guan Lin when you see him.

International juniors must register for TOEFL 

All international students in the class of 2009 need to register for the TOEFL exam.  Please go to www.ets.org/toefl and fill out the student personal sheet.  At the end you will have a seven-digit ETS ID number assigned to you. Mrs. Russell needs that number so she can register you to take the TOEFL exam. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Russell at ext. 8247, Ms. Stephanie Hall or an international senior in your dorm/unit.  They will be able to help you get online.

Student Life

Calling all talented and maybe not so talented (but at least amusing) students and faculty. Relay for Life wants you. We are looking for people to sing, dance, tell jokes, bend in weird ways, make balloon animals, play the piano, etc. for our Relay for Life event to be held in April. If you would like to exhibit your hidden skills or passions at this event to support the fight against cancer, please email Clara MacNeil (macneic@culver.org) or Taylor Whitsett (whitest@culver.org) with your name and the event in which you would like to perform. A bowling trip to Quick Lanes in Plymouth is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Cost will be $5 for transportation (charged to your student account that is billed home) and $10 cash to play. A weekly Protestant liturgical communion service is offered at 12 p.m. each Thursday in the dining hall mezzanine area. The service will last no longer than 20 minutes. Contact LTC Curtis Heydt (ext. 8489) for further information.

Reza Aslan, one of the nation’s most respected experts on Islam and the Middle East, will address an all-school assembly at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6. In addition to the all-school, he will be meeting with Humanities classes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Roberts Auditorium. Aslan’s visit is sponsored by the Montgomery Lecture Series with funding also provided by the classes of 1962 and 1966. Click here for more information.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday this week, featuring two services for Imposition of the Ashes. A Roman Catholic Mass will be held at 7 a.m. tomorrow, Feb.6, and an interdenominational service will take place at 5 p.m. later that day. Both services will be held in the Memorial Chapel.

If any Episcopal students would like to be prepared for confirmation, please contact Mr. Haynes (haynest@culver.org). Bishop Little will confirm on campus the Friday of Parents Weekend in April, and classes are about to start.

Indiana Mathematics League (IML), round 4, will be held from 3:05 to 4 p.m. today, Feb. 5, in Roberts Auditorium. All students who enjoy challenging mathematics interactions are invited to participate. Bring your calculator and a pencil and join the group.

Athletics

The CMA and CGA polo teams traveled to Connecticut this past weekend to take on Yale and the University of Connecticut. Click here for a recap of their trip from coach Goodspeed.

The CGA varsity basketball team opens sectional tournament play at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 6, against Mishawaka Marian at New Prairie. With a win, the Eagles will have their most victories in a season since 1998.
