Speech team wins weekend tournament

Congratulations to the speech team for its showing at the Avon High School Speech Invitational in Indianapolis this past weekend. Entering the meet as a 40-entry team and a separate, smaller 17-entry team, Culver Academies competed as two different groups. Out of 57 total entries, 52 placed in the finals, including seven champions and eight runners-up.  The smaller “B” team took home the forth-place trophy out of 21 teams, and the larger “A” team won the tournament. Kudos to the following competitors linked here for their stellar beginning to 2008.

Remember dates and times for prayer services

A Morning Prayer service is held at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Alumni Lounge of the Legion Memorial Building. Evening Prayer services are held at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Meditation Chapel. These services consist of prayers and scriptures, and they are a great way to practice your faith and pray for the community. On the Episcopal Church calendar, we are reminded annually of those whose lives are a witness to us. This week we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King (Jan. 15) and Antony of Egypt (Jan. 17). The services are Christian, and anyone is welcome to attend. Contact Mr. Haynes for more information.

Student Life

Indiana Math League, round 4, will be held at 3:05 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 15, in the auditorium of the science and math building. Bring a pencil and calculator to participate. All students interested in challenging math questions are invited to participate. We are presently tied for fifth in the state. Seven participants tied for top score at Culver last month with five out of six correct: Tianyu Han, Chuai He, HyoungKeun Kwon, Hao Wu, Yongzuan Wu, Zhaoheng Zheng, Xiaodan Lou.

All students who signed up to be in Hispanic Student Union and would like to help with the HSU sponsored culture/music night on Saturday, Jan. 19, should contact Katherine Lewis at lewisk@culver.org or Ana Pedrajo at pedraja@culver.org. If you didn’t sign up for HSU at the activities fair last fall and you are interested in helping out or being a part of HSU, don’t hesitate to email. Everyone is welcome to participate and attend the event, where Popo Arriolla from Honduras will be performing.

Want to show some love for our soldiers? We are sending Valentine’s Day care packages to soldiers and need your help filling them. We would love donations of anything on the wish list attached here or cash for the shipping costs. Collection boxes will be at the library, bookstore, and post office starting today, Jan. 14. There also will be a work day in February to make homemade cookies and valentines to send. If you would like to help or have any questions, please contact Claire VanLandingham vanlanc@culver.org.

If you haven’t picked up your 2008 Culver desk calendar yet, some are still available for $6 at the bookstore.
