CMA graduate nominated for Academy Award Congratulations to Hal Holbrook ’42 on earning his first Academy Award nomination today after spending more than 50 years performing on stage, screen and television. He is being recognized in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in “Into the Wild.” Holbrook will turn 83 next month. The Oscars are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 24. No all-school meeting tomorrow No all-school meeting will be held tomorrow, Jan. 23. Instead, counselors and mentors will meet at 2 p.m., followed by mentee/mentor time at 2:30 p.m. Spanish Honorary Society offering scholarships The Spanish Honorary Society will be offering 52 college scholarships (12 at $2000 and forty at $1000) to graduating senior members. If you are a senior and member of the SHS, you are encouraged to apply. Completed applications must be post-marked no later than Feb.15. Student Life The Girl Scouts will be selling cookies at dinner from 5:30 until 7 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 23. Cookies are $3.50 a box and are as delicious as ever. Bring some money and buy lots of cookies to help you through the winter blues. Any questions, contact Caroline Curry. The Culver quizbowl team finished with the seventh-best record at the Fremd High School tournament last weekend, winning matches against Maine East, Oswego East, Marist, and Conant High Schools, with its only loss coming to Libertyville. The Eagles record improved to 34-13. The team was led by Erich Stuebgen ’08, who scored 28.0 p.p.g. A request from Campus Greenlife: Now that your classes are ending, you have the opportunity to throw away all of the papers you may or may not have wanted in the first place. Please recycle used paper in the paper bins placed around campus. Also, please try to lend or sell your books instead of just throwing them away. Finally, the paper towels used campus wide can be recycled in those “paper only” recycling bins. Please take advantage of the convenient bins placed in every dorm and barrack. Crest ceremony and Martin Luther King Jr. Day ceremony photos are available for purchase in the MyCapture online picture gallery. A weekly Protestant liturgical communion service will be offered at 12 p.m. starting Thursday, Jan. 24, in the dining hall mezzanine area. The service will last no longer than 20 minutes. Contact LTC Curtis Heydt (ext. 8489) for further information. Auditions for “Moby Dick: The Musical,” begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, in Eppley Auditorium. This is a very funny, all-singing, all-dancing romp. We will have call-backs during the rec. period on Jan. 28. Be prepared to sing one verse of a song. No A Capella please. Either bring piano music or have a Karaoke CD with you. If you have any questions on what type of music or anything else, just contact Mr. Coven by email. A signup sheet is available at Eppley Auditorium. The Buxtons will host an open house for all students interested in attending from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26. Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation is hosting the 2008 Young Native Writers Contest for teenage Native Americans, offering scholarships up to $5,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. Earn some money for college by entering a variety of spring essay contests, whether at the local or international level. Some are worth a few hundred dollars, but others offer $10,000 or more. Faculty/ Staff “Best Kept Secret,” featuring an all faculty and staff jazz band, will perform from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, at the Culver Coffee Co. Those interested in playing or singing along should please get in touch with George Middleton, Bill Hargraves, or Justin Ross. The faculty/staff meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Jan. 23, has been canceled. Athletics The CMA polo opening home weekend took place this past weekend. Click here for a recap from coach Goodspeed. The CGA polo team hosts Michigan State University at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, and at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in its opening home weekend. The CMA junior varsity hockey game previously scheduled for 7:00 p.m. tonight, Jan. 22, against Mishawaka Penn, has been rescheduled for the same time on Thursday, Jan. 24. CGA basketball hosts Mishawaka Marian beginning at 6 p.m. tonight.
