Writing Center contest number two announced

Writing Center contest two is “The Book of Hours.” Read Joyce Sutphen’s poem “The Book of Hours.” In the last stanza, she writes “that was an hour well / spent. Yes, that was a keeper.” In a poem or in prose of fewer than 150 words, tell us about an hour you’ve spent well, an hour you’d call “a keeper.” Copies of “The Book of Hours” are available on the contest bulletin board outside the Writing Center and at the link here.
Submit entries by Wednesday, Nov. 14, to WritingCenter@writingcenter@culver.org.

The Cinema Club will show a Woody Allen double feature tomorrow, Nov. 2, in Roberts Auditorium of the Math/Science Building. Anyone in the Culver community may attend, and you can choose whether you would like to see one or the other, or both. “Radio Days” (88 minutes long) will play at 7 p.m., and “Hannah and Her Sisters” will play at 8:30 p.m. – or just after the first film ends.  Please arrive on time and stay throughout the showing. Click here for more information.

Play Bingo tomorrow night, Nov. 2, while the seniors are at the Beason Halloween Party. The games will begin at 8:30 p.m. in the Shack. It is free to play and there will be really awesome prizes, given by our MC’s Corinne “Gidget” Henning, Joy Kirkland, and Madeleine Balchan. Sponsored by CAB.

The Global Studies Institute’s 2007-2008 Seminar Series features the theme—“The Global Health Challenge: Making a Difference.”  The series line-up includes some world-class leaders striving to make a difference in the battle against HIV-AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and extreme poverty.  Hear their stories.  Click here for more information and here to view the GSI logo.

The “Team Scramble” math competition will take place tonight, Nov. 1. This is a 100-problem, 30-minute test in which your entire team races to complete a single answer sheet, exercising collaborative and organizational skills in addition to mathematical skills in a variety of topics from arithmetic through calculus and linear algebra. We will meet in Robert Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. to begin organizing the team and we will start the competition at 6:30.  The more people we have participate the better we’ll do. To see sample questions and more information on the competition, go to http://www.natassessment.com/.  Email Mr. Counts (countsn@culver.org) if you have questions.

The following is from Director of Technology Larry Emmons. What is Phishing? From Wikipedia - An example of a phishing email, disguised as an official email from a (fictional) bank. The sender is attempting to trick the recipient into revealing secure information by "confirming" it at the phisher's website.  In computing, phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. eBay, PayPal and online banks are common targets. Phishing is typically carried out by email or instant messaging, and often directs users to enter details at a website, although phone contact has also been used. Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users. Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical measures. If you feel you have been Phished, please contact the institution that the party is trying to mimic. You should never enter your personal information unless you are positive of the identify of the requesting party.  Technology Services attempts to capture these phishing attempts with our SPAM filter, but it is not a 100% guarantee.
