Student Life

The CGA Dining Hall Prefects are proud to host a Mystery Café from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21 in the dining hall. A person goes through the line like normal and gets food. Afterward, instead of sitting anywhere, he or she goes to the mezzanine and sees the hostess for a seating assignment. Here’s the catch: You don’t know with whom you will be sitting. It could be new or old students, girls, boys, or faculty. We hope you have fun meeting new people and getting reacquainted with old friends. If you want to participate, you must sign up. Email Dining Hall Prefects Jessica Kutch, Emily Loehmer, Jiajie Lu, Katy Marr, Do Hyun Park, Lea Stefani, Hye Sun, or Jenn Putman with questions.

The Cinema Club will show Stanley Kubrick’s black-and-white film from 1964, “Dr. Strangelove or:  How I Learned How to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”(95 minutes), at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 12, in Roberts Auditorium. All members of the Culver community are invited to attend. However, we ask that you arrive on time and stay throughout the showing. Read on for more information on the film.
“Dr. Strangelove or:  How I Learned How to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,”
Stanley Kubrick’s Cold War masterpiece is set at the height of the tensions between Russia and the United States, when all it would take to destroy the world was one push of a button…and General Jack D. Ripper is just the man to do it.  The crazed Ripper gives the go code to the 843rd bomb wing to attack Russia, setting in motion a series of darkly hilarious vignettes involving gung-ho soldiers, wacky generals, spying Russians, drunken premiers, battles with soda machines, fights in the War Room, and the Russians' top-secret Doomsday Machine. Shot in black and white, the film has three main centers of action: one of the B-52 bombers, on which a group of loyal men know they are about to start World War III; Burpelson Air Force Base, where Group Captain Lionel Mandrake is trying to convince everyone that Ripper has gone mad and the bombing must be stopped; and the War Room, where President Merkin Muffley is trying to make peace with the Russians. The finale features Peter Sellers as Dr. Strangelove, his third role in the film.  This black comedy is a vicious satire on the farcical aspects the cold war. (Blurb from www.amazon.com or www.deepdiscountdvd.com )
