Sailing makes waves at Coast Guard Academy The Culver varsity sailing travel team went to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., last weekend. Jennifer Babchuck, Timothy Zacher, Hunter Dekoninck and Samuel Todd participated and were accompanied by coaches Capt. Chris Dingle and Tim Miller. The sailing facility at the CG Academy is second to none. All aspects of sailing and seamanship are instructed there. The Coast Guard teams attend competitive races over the New England area, as well as offshore racing including the Newport to Bermuda race every year on offshore boats. Tim Zacher with Jennifer Babchuck placed eighth in the regatta of 20 “A” and 20 “B” teams. Three teams from the Midwest attended. Teams from all over New England were there with their top sailors. Both of our “A” and “B” teams scored first place in races. Of 20 teams, Culver finished 11th overall and second of the Midwest teams. Please congratulate the team members for a job well done.
Student Life Bible Study will meet tonight, Oct. 17, in the Health Issues classroom above the post office. We are starting chapter three in the Gospel of John (John was the youngest of the disciples and lived the longest). Come join us and bring a friend. Box lunch food will be provided if you don’t get to the dining hall. It is hearing test time for all sophomores. Emails will be going out with appointment dates and times for sophomores to report to the health center for their hearing tests. Please arrive on time on the designated day. If there is any conflict with dates and times please let the health center know so appointments can be rescheduled. The next group is today, Oct. 17, with sessions at 3:30 and 6:00 p.m. Cast your vote on the new Culver Academies website design. All interested students, faculty, and staff who are interested in participating in a focus group regarding the new website are invited to attend one of two sessions during CP 3 (11:20 a.m. to 1:20 p.m.) or CP4 (1:30 to 3:00 p.m.) tomorrow, Oct. 18, in Roberts Auditorium. Essays should focus on the topic “What leadership means to you,” can be no longer than one page in at least 10 point Times New Roman type, and must be emailed to Dean Weaser (weaserl@culver.org) for judging. Please consider joining thousands of students from across the nation in one of the most prestigious leadership events in the country. If you have specific questions, or would like to see a slideshow of pictures from last year’s HOBY, email Ashley Eberhart (eberhaa@culver.org). Norton with the trip name, your dorm/unit, and student ID number before noon, tomorrow, Oct. 18.
Faculty/ Staff As the annual “Shred Day” opportunity draws near, we have been asked by several people if personal documents can be bundled along with our confidential, school-related documents to be shred. Unfortunately, we must reject that option. Due to the HIPPA regulations by which we are bound, we cannot put Culver Academies in a position of risk from the standpoint of identity theft or other mismanagement or misappropriation of personal records. However, I was able to get this concession from Mike Good, the director at the Problem Waste Center who is making this opportunity available to municipalities, governmental agencies, schools, and not-for-profits. He said that if you have roughly a paper-box size quantity of material to be shred, and you call him at 1-800-935-8618 by Nov. 9 to schedule those materials to be shred at his facility (1900 Walter Glaub Drive in Plymouth), he will not likely turn you away, and you’ll only be out the inconvenience of taking it up to Plymouth. If you have any questions or concerns about shred material, please call me at 8223, or email kowalsj@culver.org.
Athletics Interested in joining the CGA swimming and diving team? Practice starts on Monday, Oct. 22. Please be on the pool deck at 3:45pm in your suit, ready to go with a cap, a pair of goggles, and a towel. Email any questions to coach Allinson (allinsl@culver.org).
