Generosity leads to free fly-fishing instruction

A total of 30 Woodcraft campers each received 10 hours of fly fishing instruction this past summer, thanks to the generosity of the St. Joe River Valley Fly Fishers and the Federation of Fly Fishers. SJRVFF and FFF member Charlie Ray provided the instruction that included rods, reels and line loaned to the camp by the SJRVFF and the FFF. Three two-week sessions were offered. Two classes took place each session with five participants per class. Primary emphasis was on casting (forward and roll), and fly tying. Knot tying instruction also was included, as well as an explanation of the equipment and gear needed to fly fish, the main categories of flies imitated by fly tiers, fishing etiquette and stewardship. The curriculum for the course was based on that provided by the FFF and the Boy Scouts. The final session put all the instruction into practice as the campers attempted fly fishing on Lake Maxinkuckee using their own flies.
