ASIAN HISTORY MONTH: During the month of May, the
United States recognizes Asian Heritage month-a celebration of Asians and
Pacific Islanders in the United States. Much like Black History and Women’s
History Months, Asian Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill
put forward by legislators.
Four political leaders introduced bills that started the idea rolling in
1977: Frank Horton of New York and California's Norman Mineta in the House
of Representatives, and Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga in the U.S.
Senate. Both bills passed and in 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a
Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. Originally coined
Asian Heritage Week, it was expanded in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush
to encompass the entire month of May, hence its current celebration during
the last 13 years. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the
immigration of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in 1843.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with community
festivals, government-sponsored activities, and educational activities for
students.
The Diversity Council will help recognize Asian Heritage Month on campus
by sponsoring the Quotes of the Day project. Through posters in the Dining
Hall and via the Daily Bulletin, you will be introduced to Asians of
various backgrounds who have and/or are making significant contributions
to our nation’s history and heritage. Additionally, you will also be
exposed to Asian nationals who have and/or are impacting their native
countries across the globe. We hope you all enjoy learning about these
various heroes and their national/global contributions. Enjoy Day 1!

To
all Culver Faculty and Staff email users: We have
been receiving an inordinate amount of SPAM email messages originating
from earthlink.net and yahoo.com. We informed both companies of
the issues and have issued a temporary block on all email coming into
our campus from these domains. This means that you will not
receive email from anyone with an email address that incudes @earthlink.net
or @yahoo.com until the block is lifted. We are working with
Earthlink and Yahoo to resolve this as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please contact Gary Sawtelle.

planning, especially towards the end of the month when so many
end-of-the-year orders are anticipated. Thank you.
