Head
of Schools John Buxton with Kim Caldwell ’87, Eduardo Wichtendahl
’91, Culver Legion President Paul Much ’68, and Chris Miller
’03, one of the
student presenters of the Young Alumni Awards
|
received the 2003 Young Alumna Award, and internationally-renowned caterer
Eduardo Walter Wichtendahl ’91 received the 2003 Young Alumnus Award.
Both were honored at a banquet attended by the class of 2003,
administrators, representatives of The Culver Legion, and members of the
faculty and staff.
“You
really develop so much independence being at Culver,” Caldwell said
during her acceptance speech. “The difference between those people who
went to Culver and those who didn’t becomes very clear as you grow
older.”
Caldwell
graduated in 1990 from the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program
at Moorpark College, where she took veterinarian, nutritional, animal
behavior and zoology courses while assisting in the development of the
Ventura County Raptor Rehabilitation and Release Program. (read
more here)
“It
is a great privilege and a great honor to be back at Culver,”
Wichtendahl told the crowd before directing most of his comments toward
the class of 2003. “Culver was a turning point in my life. Take the best
out of Culver. Take the principles you learn here and lead by example.”
Having worked in his
mother’s catering business before, during, and after
Culver, Wichtendahl set out on his own in 1993, when
he took an internship in
Paris. From there, he was a management trainee in
Bangkok, Thailand, in 1994
and then returned home for two years to become sales
manager for his mother’s
firm – Susanna Palazuelos Banquetes – in Acapulco,
Mexico, where he
increased annual sales by $500,000 through attracting
corporate customers.
