The DB wasn’t including photos during the winter season, so the swim team wanted to make sure the school year didn’t end without it getting some face time.

 2.    NOT TO BE OUTDONE BY WATER BALLOON LAUNCHERS, the humanities class led by Dr. Erwin and Mr. Sampson decided the fate of humanity yesterday.  Alien judges heard arguments on whether humanity should be allowed to renew its lease on earth and life itself in the Court of the Aliens.  If you’re reading this, Joe Stamper and his defense team must have been successful.  Thanks Joe.  Here Mr. Sampson, Andrew Kime, Joe Stamper, Seth Robinson, Jennifer Faulk, and Jake Seberger heed Caitlin Meare’s successful defense of the human species in the Alien Court. See more shots of the debate here.

 3.  SOFTBALL ADVANCES TO SECTIONAL FINAL

      WITH THRILLING 4-3 WIN

New Carlisle, IN - Culver's varsity softball team (21-1), ranked No.2 in Indiana Class 2-A, came back from a three-run deficit to oust the two-time defending champion St. Joe Indians (19-11) 4-3 in the semi-finals of the New Prairie Sectional yesterday.

Senior Katie Maroney knocked in the winning run with the bases loaded, smacking the ball to left field and bringing home junior Meghan Devlin from third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

The name of the game for the Eagles in the decisive inning was simply to put the bat on the ball, and the Eagles did just that.

Devlin led off the inning with an infield single. Sophomore Emily Newby followed with a single and freshman Alexia Clay loaded the bases with yet another single. Maroney stepped up to the plate and delivered a shocking blow to the Indians and their hopes for three consecutive Sectional championships.

Coach Jen Mascari's team uncharacteristically got off to a rocky start, going down 2-0 after the opening inning. Freshman hurler Jackie Lawrence walked in a run and the Culver defense attempted to catch a St. Joe's base runner off guard in a pickle situation with runners at first and third. The tag at first was controversially called late and the runner at third sneaked home in the process.

St. Joe's added another run in the top of the third after a single scored a runner from second.

Clay got the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the third, smashing a double to right-center and scoring Newby and senior Ashleigh Sheppard. Lawrence tied the game at 3-3 when she knocked in Clay on an error. Lawrence hit a blooper that was dropped in the Indian's outfield.

Lawrence and the Eagles played solid defensive softball to preserve the tie and to give themselves an opportunity to win the game in its late moments.

Lawrence retired the side in the top of the fourth inning and miraculously powered her way out of a situation where St. Joe's put runners on first and second with no outs in the top half of the fifth. Lawrence had four strikeouts on the day.

The last time the two teams met was on May 17 when St. Joe's gave Culver its only loss of the season with a 1-0 nine-inning win in the championship game of the Goshen Tournament.

Culver shutout Marian 3-0 in the first round of the Sectional at New Prairie on Monday.

The Eagles get their shot at a Sectional championship and a chance to advance to the Regionals Friday at 5:00 p.m. against the winner of host New Prairie (22-7) and John Glenn (15-13), Northern State Conference rivals.

 4.  CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MAY ATHLETES OF THE MONTH!

Alexia Clay, a freshman from Ciel, is from Rochester, Indiana.  She is the catcher for the girl’s varsity softball team, which stands at 20-1 and played in the sectional semi-final game last night against St. Joe.  She is currently batting .589 with 34 RBI’s, 11 doubles, 1 triple, and a state-leading 8 homeruns. Defensively, she has thrown out 15 runners attempting to steal.

Lora Dushanova, a sophomore in Linden, is from Sliven, Bulgaria.  Lora now stands at 15-0 at the #1 singles position on the girl’s tennis team.  Her current set record is 30-1, winning seventeen of those sets 6-0.  She has defeated the #1 player from Warsaw (who is currently in the top ten in the state) along with three other players that were all-state last season.  Lora continues play in the individual regional tournament in South Bend. She won last night, beating

Allyson Scherb from South Bend Adams 6-0, 6-1.  Allyson was the co-MVP of her conference and has beaten some pretty good competition. This match brought Lora’s record to 16-0, and 32-1 in sets.  She has won 18 of those sets 6-0.

Chris Schumerth, a first-classman in Battery A, is from Culver, Indiana.  In 19 games this season, Chris is batting .493 with 35 hits, 10 doubles, 3 triples, and one homerun.  He has 14 RBIs and has a slugging percentage of .965.  Chris, also one of the varsity pitchers, is currently 3-0 on the mound with an ERA of 1.98.

 5.  SO I SHOW UP AT CULVER, BABY FACED, AND IGNORANT, especially to what Culver had in store for me. I had never shaved before in my life…OK, so I had TRIED, but who was I kidding? I didn’t have a single whisker on my face. And after a few weeks at Culver I realized there were hundreds of things I had never experienced before.

“Never before had I been crammed in a place with 200 other people who had never seen or met one another. But amazingly, Culver has a way of transforming those 200 or so strangers into a tight-woven network of brothers and sisters,” said Regimental Commander Andrew Ramsey at yesterday’s last All-School Meeting of the year.  Read the rest of Andrew’s reflection on his Culver career here.
