 7.  AMONG THE TRADITIONAL EVENTS ON GRADUATION

WEEKEND is a carillon recital on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., which is open

to the public.  Mr. Gouwens, Carillonneur of the Academies, will continue that

tradition with a recital on May 31 at 7:30.  For these annual evening programs,

Mr. Gouwens makes a point of including pieces evocative of the night, or

            especially atmospheric in character.

One of his specialties is making arrangements of piano pieces by Spanish

composers for carillon performance. Two such selections will be included on

May 31, both by Barcelona composer Federico Mompou: “Young Girls in the

Garden” (one of Mompou’s most famous pieces), and a selection from “Charmes”

(referring to magic) entitled “For Inspiring Love.” The rich, exotic harmonies of

both pieces are superbly effective on the carillon. This will be the first performance

            of these carillon arrangements.

Other selections particularly appropriate to the atmosphere include “Carillon

at Twilight,” one of Mr. Gouwens’ own compositions, and a harp piece by French

composer Jacques Ibert, “Evening on a Boat.”

The recital also will include improvisations on evening hymns, and

compositions by French-Canadian Emilien Allard, Dutch carillonneur Jacques

Maassen, and the “Sonata” for carillon by Belgian composer Jef van Hoof. Jef van

Hoof was a prominent composer for the Belgian radio, and taught composition at

the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen. The “Sonata” is the largest of his carillon

compositions, and a rich example of the Belgian romantic genre of carillon

            composition.

The program will last approximately an hour. A tour will be offered

immediately following the recital for those interested in taking a close look at the

carillon and seeing it in action. In the event of rain, but we know it won’t rain on

Grad Weekend, the tower will be open DURING the recital.

For those lucky enough to be in Culver all summer, carillon recitals also will

be presented on the following Saturdays at 4:00 p.m.: June 21 and 28; July 5, 12,

19, and 26; August 30; and October 11. The July 12 program will feature noted

carillonneur and composer John Courter, from Berea College, Berea, Kentucky.

Mr. Gouwens will play the remaining programs.
